Protecting children’s rights – law firms

When children or adults are mistreated by staff working in places like prisons, hospitals or children’s homes, they may be able to take legal action and receive compensation for what they have suffered. Getting help from a lawyer can also make a big difference, by helping those who have experienced abuse or mistreatment in prison or another institution feel listened to and more protected.

Below, we list law firms that have been recognised for their work protecting human rights and freedoms. All of these law firms have experience of protecting the rights of people in custody, including children, and challenging the police and the government. Lawyers there have represented hundreds of people, including children, young people and their families, to take action to defend the rights of people in custody, including claiming compensation following mistreatment during a person’s time in prison.

This list is organised in an alphabetical order and is based on a public ranking of law firms called ‘The Legal 500’.

The public ranking is based on different areas of specialism and the list below gives the details of law firms that have been recognised for their work in the area of ‘human rights and civil liberties’ (which includes challenging human rights violations, defending prisoner’s rights and challenging the police and other state institutions). Within this category, law firms are grouped into four tiers – they are all experts with substantial experience in this specific area but firms listed in Tier 1 are considered the best. You can see the full ranking here.
