We are overjoyed that Luke and Oliver Kemmis have conquered the MARATHON DES SABLES 2021, a spectacular feat they undertook to raise funds for our small charity in honour of their father, John Kemmis, a children’s rights champion and social worker of 50 years.
This video shows the brothers arriving at the finish line – after covering 223.5km across 6 stages in 6 days. The race is held in the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco.
Carolyne Willow, Article 39’s Director, says:
“Luke and Oliver have shown exceptional kindness, strength and determination in taking on this challenge, and getting over the finish line! This year’s event had the highest drop-out rate which is no wonder given the gruelling demands of the race and the reality that runners have had to prepare for this in the middle of a global pandemic.
“The funds Luke and Oliver have been able to raise mean we can launch a brand new children’s rights course for children and young people, which we are naming after their Dad as testament to his life-long commitment to making sure children are heard, respected and never stand alone.
“Thank you so much Luke and Oliver, and to the rest of your family, for believing in Article 39 and the children and young people we serve – we won’t let you or John down.”
